Forty years ago, luxury branding wasn’t yet a specialty. It ran on instinct and craftsmanship, and on a handful of family houses that measured success in generations, not quarters.
The O Group opened in New York in 1986. Our first clients were film and video studios: Miramax, Sony Video and Fine Line. Ferragamo came next, and as more of our work came from premium and luxury brands, we made luxury the agency’s focus.
The industry has changed at almost every turn since, and we’ve worked through each change. Family maisons were absorbed by global groups. Luxury wealth moved east, then spread well beyond any one region. Digital changed how a house talks to its clients. This past June we wrote about the latest shift. Overall spending is holding up, but fewer brands are winning, and the ones that are know exactly what they stand for. Our Standard / High / Ultra framework for luxury category tiers gave a name to patterns we’d seen across four decades of client work.
What Hasn’t Changed
Our view of what makes a luxury brand last hasn’t moved in forty years. It comes down to judgment, built over many market cycles, more than size or visibility. We’ve also always worked in the same order: strategy first, then creative. Work can be beautiful and still fail a brand if there’s no clear positioning under it. Without that foundation, it’s decoration.
That approach is also why our clients stay. We were Ferragamo’s U.S. agency for more than twenty years and Robert Marc’s for eleven.
Built Category by Category
Few independent agencies our size work across as many luxury categories, and what we learn in one usually sharpens the others.
In fashion, our long partnership with an Italian heritage house taught us how a brand can cross an ocean without losing what makes it distinct, and we’ve launched new labels like Shwetambari.
In fine spirits, we were agency of record for Hennessy for eight years and have worked on brands for Moët Hennessy USA, Diageo and Rémy USA.
In jewelry and watches, our work with Harry Winston, Kimberly McDonald, GC Watches and Effy ranges from the rarest stones to accessible luxury.
In home, we did a full rebrand for Artistic Tile and have worked with Mascioni Italian Linens, Merritt Woodwork and PGT Brands.
In hospitality, our clients have included The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach, Acqualina Resort & Spa, Keswick Hall, Perrine at The Pierre, Paws Up and the W Hotel New York, from boutique resorts to landmark city hotels.
In automotive, we’ve worked with Mono Group.
Looking Ahead
“When I started, very few women were building agencies, and fewer still in luxury. I’ve watched that change over forty years, for me and for the women who came up alongside and after me. What makes this milestone mean something is the people: our clients, our collaborators and our team. We’re looking ahead to the next forty.” — Orit, Founder & CEO
